discussing OSS I objectively know that ignoring your community when you maintain a big popular library is an ass move

but at the same time I always have this feeling that it's such a "compulsory" situation.

like, someone builds whatever they felt like and publishes the code so other people can also do whatever they feel like, it gets popular, and you suddenly have the responsibility to tend to everyone's wants from the thing you built.

discussing OSS next day we'll discuss my other thing, "yes I forked your thing and implemented some change or improvement, but I don't have enough energy to handle all the contribution red tape, if you want it just feel free to upstream it yourself"

discussing OSS @kitten Yeah, it's such a tricky situation. I feel like it's also a lot about setting boundaries and expectations - I treat personal projects and community projects very differently, but I default to thinking that large projects are community projects.

discussing OSS @kitten communicate "this is discontinued", then people know they should fork it and you are not blamed for issues

discussing OSS @eloy I was just thinking of pulling something like, forking your own library, maybe change the name or whatever, and keep working just on what you feel like

discussing OSS @kitten this one will have the mild take of "it depends"

if its something that most of the community wants (e.g. SSO) and one is doing gatekeepery things... bleh
