@kitten While I've been in the furry subculture since I was like 13 or so, I have only ever made terrible experiences at actual events. The online community is usually great, but real-life meetups have been horrible without fail.
When I was 14 I got invited to an apparently fake furmeet at a shady motorway restaurant by like five older men, and I dipped out last second when I realised something was fishy and this wasn't real. I am pretty sure I'd have been trafficked or something back then.
The (real) furmeet closest to where I grew up was held in the middle of a violent neo-nazi neighbourhood (#Dortmund#Dorstfeld) and nobody felt like that was an issue. It was also quite obvious that some of the organisers were thinly veiled alt-righters as well.
Also, I'm always afraid of attacks on fur conventions and the sidelines, ever since the gas attacks on EF back then. I wouldn't feel safe, and I'd feel constantly judged when in the vicinity or even on the train rife there.
Lastly, I struggle a lot with internalised everything, so I probably would feel miserable there anyway. I'd flip flop hard between insecurity, jealousy, "cringe" and (internalised) bigoted hatred when confronted with other furs being themselves in public. I'd probably not feel very well. :(
