We really need a legislation to force Android vendors that are selling their phones in EU to allow "bootloader unlocking".

Like, come on. It's literally a one-bit check by an "application" before loading the Linux kernel. Yet, vendor after vendor is removing the ability to skip this check for muh "security".

It's never about security, it's about control. If you can't install your own OS, they can collect your data to sell and push ads onto you.
It's basically like buying a laptop in 2008 with Windows Vista and pre-loaded malware that made it unusable. Everyone wiped it and installed a clean copy of XP or Linux, imagine being unable to do that...

If we don't stand up to vendors, in the future they'll take this option away. I hope they realize there'll be no reason to buy Android anymore (no way to "sideload" due to Play Protect, no way to replace the OS/remove GApps) and everyone will go "fuck it, I'm just gonna get an iPhone".

For many years Android/iOS duopoly was unbreakable, but thanks to Google's recent (stupid) decisions this could (and I hope will) change. Current "smartphones" are just the prefect tools of digital dystopia.

@elly this will be hard to get through since a lot of lobbying is in play here, but one thing you could do is write a summary for policymakers. 1 to 3 pages of why this is important and solid arguments for it

@multisn8 @elly EDIT: the following is likely a misunderstanding / misinfo; some vendors did disable the ability to unlock your bootloader, but that was NOT required by the UE.

i’m sad to tell you both that
due to an UE law about data privacy, bootloader unlocking is disappearing from vendors that did allow it before

just let this platform die, there’s virtually nothing of value left in android nowadays

@domi @elly @multisn8 what do you mean with "platform"? I don't really care for custom AOSP distros, but we need unlocking for anything else as well. The hardware isn't going anywhere.

writing bootloader exploits for every phone variant is not really feasible

I wish Apple made Asahi Mobile a possibility...

@domi @kitten @eloy @multisn8 for me the absolute peak phones were:
- HTC TyTn II (technically a PDA, but I owned one at some point and it did everything I wanted. Watching anime on 240x320 screen, or blasting music + SSHing into the server in my bedroom was such a vibe)
- Nokia C6-00/E7 (had Nokia C7 as hand-me-down from my brother, I wished I had physical keyboard but Symbian Anna/Belle was the shit)

@elly @domi @eloy @multisn8 I had a Motorola Flipout as my first phone and, even though it was Android, that form factor was unbeatable
