For me, my apartment is in a fourplex and here even though you don't understand the words someone is saying, when it is absolute quiet (e.g. in the middle of the night) you can hear when the people one floor up are talking through the floor, for whatever reason. And when something happens in the common stairway you also hear it within the apartment as my door is far from sound proof.
