@kitten When the thermal grease is so crusty that no thermal transfer occurs and merely being powered on causes the CPU to throttle down to its lowest frequency.
@theking@kitten, which can happen on even genuine adapters just from wear. my laptop has eaten like 3 dell chargers at this point and they cost a pretty penny
@theking@kitten it also depends on power settings. i mean I have mine set to prioritize longevity since I ate through a laptop battery (it was at like 40% capacity 💀 must've been all the times I shoved my dead laptop in my bag or just let it die). Right now, my laptop charger can provide full power, but it floats my battery at ~80% (usually it'll discharge to about 74% before going back up). The 5% drop is from me letting my laptop die again (I corrected this behavior because the thought of having to pay another outrageous amount on top of the laptop chargers...)
@theking@kitten I mean I know they did. This laptop I got right when 12th gen came out and I remember windows had such bad battery life bc the scheduler couldn't keep up. Linux was marginally better (kernel ver <5.20) and then after that linux had a way better scheduler on 5.20 and I noticed like 4-6 hour battery life on just balanced. i am sure I could tweak things by cutting down on some daemons and having more aggressive power management settings, but it hasn't been a problem.
@theking@kitten idk about that i haven't run bare metal windows on this machine ever since I installed fedora. i have my windows SSD somewhere, but I kinda just left it loose on my desk and so god knows if it's usable anymore.
