@kitten I didn't know about this site. What's the reason for the censorship?

@fruitchypear they probably wanted to block a specific subdomain and ended up blocking all of it

@fruitchypear like, it's just a dynamic dns service, it automatically updates the ip address of your domain if your ISP gives you a dynamic one

@kitten even if it's shitty, it's cool to learn that http error 451 is government censorship.

@lelehier my guess would be: they wanted to block a specific subdomain sharing pirated content, and either by ignorance or by accident, they blocked the whole thing

@rachaelspooky yes, the Ministry of Culture maintains a list of domain names that all ISPs must block for hosting pirated content

a couple of private businesses, like Movistar TV and LaLiga, also have that authority, after a judge have them what is basically a blank check to block whatever IP addresses they felt were infringing their intellectual property

@kitten @rachaelspooky wait what? they block the IP? Most other places they just mess with the DNS.

@sa7dse @rachaelspooky because of DoH, mostly. they also used to run DPI to look at the SNI and block depending on that, but can't anymore with the rollout of Encrypted Client Hello

@sa7dse @rachaelspooky just to be clear only the second case I mentioned blocks by IP. the first list I mentioned is either DNS or SNI

@sa7dse @rachaelspooky at this point I just keep a VPN always on, otherwise Internet is unusable. they block Cloudflare when a football match is being played

@kitten @rachaelspooky It sounds a bit like Dubai. Just that they have different reasons for blocking much of the internet.

@sa7dse @rachaelspooky oh, totally. I expected to have to use these tools against an authoritarian government censoring opposition, not because LaLiga wanted to make more money from their football TV rights. it's even more dystopic this way.

@kitten @rachaelspooky It sucks that they have that much power. In Germany they will now start charging "Cloud Providers" for every "Cloud" they sell. Like they already get money for every storage device you buy, now they want money for cloud, since one can store copyrighted material in such a "cloud".

(Yes the "number of clouds" wording is from them)
