@kitten sure, but a smoke detector seems like a no brainer to me. it saves lives by alerting you there's a fire instead of you having to find out when there's too late (or maybe dying directly if you happened to be sleeping)

@mildsunrise no yeah but I meant it like, we obviously seem to care about security, like those examples show, so why do we ignore that specific bit?

@kitten i guess we don't need it as badly as in the US where houses are made out of cardboard? idk

@kitten maybe Germany cares more about safety in this particular area because they had some particularly tragic incidents or something. maybe smoke detectors are less of an inconvenience there than here, where we literally put things on fire once a year and make barbecues and stuff

@mildsunrise @kitten iirk it was a spree of fires from some clothing or similar thingy
and well, we went hard on both sides of regulating flamability of stuff like that as well as on detection

we still have the inconvenience of fire (e.g. my living room has a wood fire place), but there are special detectors for that (same as with for kitchens)

@4censord @kitten ah thanks, i was wondering what happened with fireplaces in particular

@mildsunrise @kitten yeah, there is two types of (specifically) smoke detectors, and multiple differnet types of fire detectors
and well combinations of the two

one type looks at light absorbstion levels (as smoke absorbs lioght), and the other looks for "amount of free ions in the air"
the light based one is good for smoke intensive fires (e.g. a slowly cooking electical device), but bad for very clean burning fires (like gases, liquids or e.g. some types of paper)

in kitchens or where there is fireplaces they are combined with temperature change detectors, so only alert if there is a sudden temperature spike
