@16af93 it's not the task it's the having different words for the same things depending on the education level. here it's a professor from kindergarten to university, and a subject, and a class

explanation @kitten

Fächer are classes/subjects while a Vorlesung is a specific kind of class session which is only really encountered in university and more like a talk

re: more detailed explanation of german school terms @16af93 @kitten @q T/L note; the "English" translations you used there are specifically en_US; other English dialects can considerably differ ⚠

re: more detailed explanation of german school terms @16af93 @kitten @q yeah there's just a general health hazard around any schooling terms in any language spoke in more than 1 country, they can be highly regionalised.

Even just some of the differences between the English and Scottish school systems confuse me.

re: more detailed explanation of german school terms @erincandescent @16af93 @q @kitten that I had to request from the SBB (at no charge tbh but it took them An While) as they only had it in English

uspol @erincandescent @q @kitten yeah, but the internet is an extentsion of the currently still extant imperial american cultural power projection, so most non-native speakers are more likely to be familiar with the yankie terms and in doubt there are other more reliable resources than some random shitposter from germany on this topic

re: uspol @16af93 @q @kitten doing the Schulzeit bit of the course in Germany was fun because we ended up with a situation where 13 people tried to explain the intricacies and differences of like 11 different schooling systems in just-over-A1-level German neocat_laugh_sweat

re: more detailed explanation of german school terms @erincandescent @16af93 @kitten @q don't forget the differences between the English (rich), the English (smart), and the English (poor) systems

I went to a "preparatory school" and a "senior school" and was thoroughly confused talking to normal people

more detailed explanation of german school terms @16af93 @kitten @q an addition for university
Student - student
Vorlesung - lecture
There's also Übung which is kind of a more practical class usually held by some assistant to the professor and there are seminars (Seminar) which is sometimes used interchangeably
