I think we should all be a little more mindful of the fact that a majority of things we read online are from the USA.
Many people shape their worldview mainly from online interactions, and there's nothing wrong with that.
But some things entered our collective consciousness through cultural osmosis when they're really just specific to the US and don't apply here at all.

Like, they got a limited number of sick days over there, no matter how often you're actually sick. That surely has a bearing on how bleak and frustrated disabled people are with their daily lives.
It's a place that has next to no workers' protections. No wonder it's a trivial statement to say that people in IT "have to" stay overtime or come in on free days when some server goes down until it's back up.
We just accept so many things as a fact of life that are really just US-specific phenomena. And then they inform our sociopolitical opinions elsewhere.
No, working in IT doesn't automatically mean having to pull unpaid overtime when some database breaks on a Friday. You go home when your working hours end. No, retail isn't automatically hell. That's US culture.
