kink btw! I didn't explain the tech part of this

the idea is getting some nrf51822 small boards and flash OpenHaystack on them, and read the location from a server. and see how that goes!

kink @kitten be aware that they don't rotate the key, so you're easily identifiable via bluetooth

kink @LilaHexe yes, that's also something I considered... but the fact that they'd need to be in Bluetooth proximity kinda makes it a tolerable risk for me

I'm tempted to tinker a bit with actual airtags though, albeit that's more conditioned by the convenient form factor

kink @kitten I can definitely help you extract the private key from an airtag next time we meet up

kink @LilaHexe I wonder how do Apple Airtags rotate its public key in a way that the owner can also calculate it... with a common seed to generate the keys, it shouldn't be that hard to replicate in a custom device 🤔

kink @kitten yep, but I couldn't find a library to do it on the tiny chip I bought. Maybe I didn't look hard enough? Idk

kink @LilaHexe I saw some people doing the trick of just hardcoding a bunch of public keys and iterating through those. better than nothing I guess, but still potentially trackable over time

kink @kitten yep I did that too :D. Only had enough storage for ~2000 keys tho

kink @LilaHexe how do you keep track of when to rotate them? do you keep track of the current time in the chip, and trust that you'll never have to remove the battery?

kink @kitten yep that's basically how I did it. It also desynced over time (the chip doesn't have a RTC), so it probably needs some kind of mechanism where my code on my computer can keep track of that.

kink @kitten my hacky workaround was to always query the current key + the previous key

kink @LilaHexe oh so it's not a finished thing then? like, you still haven't worked on the "keeping track from the server" part?

kink @kitten I wanted to rotate hourly tho, or even more often, to avoid triggering the anti-stalking alert on nearby iPhones
