Please respond with your best guess for what each of these flags mean. Imagine they are visible, hoisted on a pole, on the beach. And please mark as spoiler/CW your answers :)

Final, correct answer And here's the answer! No one managed to get all three flags right, although some were pretty close.

The red flag indicates that you aren't allowed to enter the water at all, due to dangerous conditions.

The yellow flag indicates that there is increased danger when in the water, usually (in Australia) strong rip tides. Often you are advised to only go in waist-deep.

And finally, the red-on-yellow flags always come in pairs (in Australia). The area between these flags is monitored by lifesavers, who will come rescue you if you start to have difficulty in the ocean. Between these flags, surfing is prohibited, as it's reserved for people casually swimming. Note that
body boarding doesn't count as surfing, and you're supposed to do that between the flags too.

So, to summarise:
Red: don't swim
Yellow: swim carefully
Red-on-yellow: swim here, because trained people are keeping an eye on you and keeping you safe

Very intuitive.

RE: Final, correct answer @kitten actually they will come to you if you do that, with a floatation device, and ask if you need help. While they can still see you, of course

RE: Final, correct answer @LilaHexe although that doesn't indicate if a lifeguard is on duty, one has to check the schedule for that separately
