I had a Eurostar inspector once tell me and the woman sitting at my side something in some language. she showed him her ticket, and the inspector left

immediately after, I asked her what is it that he wanted, since he didn't check mine, and she said "oh I have no idea, I didn't understand him either, I just showed him my ticket and he seemed satisfied"

if I had a euro for every time a ticket inspector deliberately checked the ticket of the person at my side and not mine, I would have two euros

@kitten based on my observation one significant factor is mask wearing. The reasoning behind that may be diverse, I can think of several reason why one would abstain from checking a mask wearing passenger. (not all negative)
