@kitten this is actually more universal regionally ironically, given that theres 3 written languages in britain but only one sign language

@Transbian_Arsonists @kitten why BSL would be necessary when it's already up there in text form

@ielenia @kitten its translating the voice announcements not the sign, although deaf people are more likely to be illiterate too

@Transbian_Arsonists @kitten ok fair but this is why most other places just put the announcements up as text, which also benefits people with auditory processing or hearing issues who otherwise don't know sign language, e.g. me or my deaf partner who doesnt know ASL

@ielenia @kitten they do, they just have 4 options now, "read the board, read the transcription, listen to the audio, or listen to the signer"

@ielenia @kitten now if a deaf person has difficulty reading they can just look at the bsl, deaf people are much more likely to get a lackluster education so theres probably a lot of people who wouldnt be able to read the transcriptions fast enough, i knew plenty of people at school who couldnt read at speaking speed.

unit @Transbian_Arsonists , unit @ielenia , mx @kitten : iirc deaf people who were deaf from birth , even if they are literate , have a sign language as their first language , with the written/spoken language as their second (idk about BSL but ASL has grammar differences from English for example) , so even then it might be useful . IIRC learned that from Trash Discourse (youtube.com) (though all their videos are gone for some reason ?)

@minekpo1 @ielenia @kitten yeah this is all true, bsl naturally has grammar differnces from english, its a completely unrelated language to english so there arent that many similarities

minor nitpick @ielenia oh no idea. I just took what I know from the name of the Spanish Sign Language. but that'd make sense, yes

minor nitpick @kitten @ielenia sign languages are regional in ways which differ from spoken languages. British and American sign are actually unrelated.

Likewise German Sign (which nearly went extinct) and Austrian Sign are from different families

@kitten while d/Deaf people can (mostly) read English/any written language they've learned, many consider sign language their L1 (native language), due to learning it before written language. i don't know about british sign language, but in many sign languages, sentence structures and vocabulary can be different to the local spoken/written language(s), making it easier to understand for d/Deaf people

-- at least according to my accessibility classes, i'm not deaf myself and none of the people i'm close to currently are either
