for a shocking amount of people, the thought process "yes yes blah i know the social media service I'm using is run by fascists abusing everyone's user data for horrifying ends, but 'tooting' sounds like a fart joke and these annoying nerds should just not make it so infantile if they want me to switch" is apparently not considered insane

@lianna @kitten oh god this reminds me too much of my grandma looking at the coffee machine while I explain to her which (singular) button to press for the coffee to come out

Like I was a naive child back then who believed anyone could easily handle any technology but even then how hard can it be to operate a Nespresso machine

@crazazy @kitten It's much much less about how difficult the technology actually is, it is about the general attitude toward the technology in question. There is no possible design that would not be considered "difficult" for them, because it's not about difficulty at all. In the same way that there is no way for a trans person to act that a transphobe would find acceptable. They'll just move the goal posts.

When it comes to the Fediverse for example, a lot of people have this 'gut feeling' that anything commercial ran by a nice young man in a suit is automatically 'official', 'legal' and 'trustworthy'. Whereas anything community-run and free must naturally have a catch: it's probably illegal, broken, or for total nerds.

Humans are prone to letting their pattern recognition turn life into one big 'gut feeling' that takes over all their decision making. They rightfully learned once that "if something is free, you're the product", but then that pattern overtakes all of their reasoning capabilities and turns into a static axiom.

No matter what the Fediverse looks or works like, it would always be wrong in some way to them, because they have decided that from the second they heard about it.
