it's sad that smart glasses have become inevitably tied to AI and privacy invasion. because, you know, I'd love to have some kind of "heads up display" thing. I don't need a camera for that.
@lis@kitten i don't know if anyone successfully integrated a visor with a HUD, but Carbon did do some experiments with a little screen + lenses from reading glasses, and @0x6e6174 has some sort of HUD glasses that might fit inside a visor?
@anya@kitten@lis they also look so silly, have a horribly bizzare usb serial console (the kernel needed to be patched for it to work reasonably), and are manufactured by epson of all companies.
their intended use is... auto mechanics? something like that? that is what is suggested by the photographs on their website iirc.
anyways, if one wants a hud it would recommend these (the epson moverio bt-40). they are a bit expensive, but also probably the nicest AR glasses one can buy on account of the fun bugs (sometimes the computer in them decides blue should be pink and needs to be power cycled), no ai bullshit, nice display (34(?)° FOV, 1920x1080, shockingly readable), nice sensor package that just works with iio sensor proxy (until this one broke something with its kernel, at least), and the sigle usb-c port for power, serial, audio (they have a 3.5mm jack, they are up there in the list of most complicated usb -> aux adapters), and video.
it thinks the fpga that decodes the display port signal might be running software slightly out of spec? iphones consistently make the display flicker when plugged in, but every other device has no issues.
@kitten@anya@lis yeah, it is very nice. that photograph is with the display at ~50% brightness, too. one thing to note is that color accuracy decreases as brightness increases, the darker colors will become a bit green. it's not really a problem because 50% brightness is fine anywhere but direct sunlight.
the display looks much bigger than that on an eye instead of a camera sensor also.
@kitten Heck I just realized I doubt I can ever wear my XReal glasses in public that much again. At least without scaring people.
They do have cameras, but they are black and white only, not even accessible via the SDK and purely used to figure out where your hands are and such for gestures.
But of course, they're glasses with cameras, so most people will probably just assume it is one of those spyware devices >.<
