Thought of the day:

Can anyone give any good reason why you have to put your luggage through X-ray scanners in order to get on the Eurostar through the Channel Tunnel, when:

1. you can just drive a car onto a shuttle train through the tunnel and get anything you like through/into it that way

2. every single actual fire inside the tunnel has, predictably, been caused by a road vehicle inside the shuttle

You also don’t need to put your luggage through X-rays to go through the Gotthard base tunnel, fwiw

Also: St Pancras has vastly more international platform capacity than it actually needs but there’s clearly a huge bottleneck in security and border control and then also in the capacity of the post-security lounges

Seems very much like the designers of St Pancras thought, ‘well, the UK will join Schengen one day …’ but Schengen has nothing to do with the luggage checks, and even if the UK had joined those would presumably have stayed

/s @dpk don't worry, there was one (1) time where it was useful!

they found someone carrying a grenade in their suitcase. but they raised the alarm too late and that passenger had already gotten in their train to Madrid, so they had to evacuate both stations. turns out it was just a belt buckle in the shape of a grenade
