career idea now that oil is fucked: personal train planner

someone who organizes your train trip through Europe, and most importantly, takes care of any issues while you're traveling, suggesting new connections, bringing up solutions and agreements that usually not even the train staff remembers, and all that stuff

@kitten yes-ish. there used to be one for train trips but they stopped doing that a couple years ago, as I discovered when I needed a train travel agent to figure out a trip to finland...

@kitten (also the local travel agent told me point-blank that they only do plane travel and there's nobody left who does train planning since that one company stopped, so... yeah, hole in the market there)

@kitten I think that's what they're supposed to be? make your trip and is a point of contact to solve issues for you. Although they mostly deal with planes and hotels nowadays

@kitten different tiers of support available. At the highest, they travel with you, showing you all the shortcuts through the stations on your way.

@kuriko @kitten oh heck no, that's required part of that tier of support.

Look you don't get to have the support of that level of train nerd, if you're not willing to learn a lot of things you didn't know where possible to learn.

@domi yes! I know many people who do that for their friends, especially since most of it is only learned with experience

that's why I think it could be extended to people who don't happen to have train nerd friends, I feel it's one of the biggest barriers to long-distance train travel

@zora @kitten
A job which involves frequently calling train lines and bus companies to arrange replacement services, search for lost luggage, etc?
I think this would be a nightmare for autistic people.

@arina @kitten I can see how that would be a problem for many! With my personal flavor of autism, I’ve found that calls are much less of a problem as soon as I understand the specific processes/ organisations involved. I would hate having to call a rail operator now, but it would be fine after doing it as a day job for a few weeks.

@kitten I'm in dammit!!
Call the business "The Train Nerds" or possibly something witty.

If you book, you get tickets & an info packet with route info, personal suggestions from the team.

The Guided Tour info comes with accompanying infodumps and a need for snacks 😊

@kitten I would pay for this help.
There's already the Treinreiswinkel in NL, who I
was planning to call for help with our travel for next year, because they've been good in the past.
