okay so, there's something I'd like to do

I need something that keeps tracking my location through my phone's GPS all night, to see what path does my train take

Google Maps' timeline doesn't work for that, it only polls the GPS from time to time

@kitten so far, I've used Open Tracks for recording GPS data and it worked well, even over longer distances/durations — also rather minimalistic, at least compared to any maps app; the traces are in standard formats and can be viewed in OsmAnd & other software

Just don't like to have a full maps thingy running. I uses more battery and sometimes crashes on my brick.
So nothing I'll recommend … but also not actively discourage.
(Just prefer something smaller/lighter for myself, thus recommending that, when it comes up.)

@kitten Pretty sure OSMAnd has that option through GPX, or OpenGpxTracker on iOS.

@LilaHexe hmm I've done everything they mentioned in their docs to have the most accurate constant tracking and it seems to be doing good for now. we'll see during the night though...

@kitten it seems u did find a solution, and probs the better one, all things considered

but it did make me want to point out i have a lil project called TransLoco which is basically self hosted (Apple) Find My or (Google) Find My Devices

although, it has no documentation and only the server stuff is in the repo, i.e no client/app, just some unpublished scripts, MacroDroid macros and iOS shortcuts

@kitten yeahhh, i reworked the MacroDroid macro entirely recently, and there's been some weird bugs (of which is entirely MacroDroid being fucky (iterating through a dictionary will just break in weird ways randomly, but only in the action/function that does the HTTP/API request

))

i do intend to both actually make a proper README with screenshots and everything (recently reworked the UI mostly entirely, so it does look nice and is MD3)

oh and recently added geolocate support, so a device (mostly ones without GPS) can merely send its WiFi hotspots and the server will attempt to geolocate the device with that

devices can also send extra data to be shown in the UI, i.e battery, connect WiFi hotspot, accuracy of location data etc etc

and recently added some multi user support, both for logging in, but also letting others see it devices (albeit everything is defined in a JSON5 file

)

there's a couple other neat details but yeah

OsmAnd worked fairly well... it left a small patch untracked (with only some dots tracked in that segment), but then it continued on its own during the night and went well from there... so it doesn't seem like the app got battery-saver-killed or anything, I wonder what happened there
