sometimes I wonder if I should look for a different job other than computers

I'm good at them and I do like them a lot. but does that actually make it the best job for me?

@kitten most computer touchers tend to do farming

If farming would have great career prospects I would trade computers for farming any day

I like mechanics and engines, that could be something

I like trains too

still thinking about this

I've never had a more "repetitive" work, as in, I've always been in software and it always involved building "new" stuff, rather than just having a specific task to be performed again and again, or just fixing stuff that already exists, without having to actually add anything new to it

I wonder how would I do at that

@kitten I've done bar tending a bunch of times and at least behind a (very) busy bar it's very fun but I think if it was my actual every day job I'd find it intellectually unstimulating

@erincandescent oh there's no chance in the world I'm working on the hospitality industry, at least here in Spain. there's not a single place that doesn't rely on worker exploitation, and most are just barely a viable business anyway

@kitten I've done it at festivals (mostly hacker camps tbh) and like it's just continuous motion and (when busy) triage

@kitten it mostly functions as an example of repetitive work imo

@erincandescent @kitten Yeah done it for a bit (high-school cafeteria and then some local events), it's pretty fun, but I don't think I would do this on a regular basis either.
Except maybe if the routers dies or something. ^^

@lanodan @kitten the other day I basically spent half an hour with the beer tap close to running full time, that was fun

(There were ~three people in front of me selling & serving and lots of orders for 3/4/5 cups coming in so they were going out at a rate)

@erincandescent @kitten Also sometimes fun to have a bit of a chat, although you can end up being a trapped audience if they constantly talk to you.

RE: silly @kitten cute, but I'm not really a train girl. I'd be more interested in social work, pedagogy, or maybe sex work

@kitten still very tempted to put "amateur sexologist" in my fedi bio, but worried it'll have the same vibe as those t-shirts "free sex coach" that some dudes like to wear

@kitten I've gone ahead and put it in my bio. I think sending out a survey after an orgy more than qualifies me for the title "amateur sexologist" 💜

@LilaHexe I guess you could always use more relaxed terms like "investigating human sexuality". although it feels a bit less natural

@kitten that is the question for me too... I already ditched programming because I felt like I'm not fit to it any more and switched to other computery specializations, but what else there is for me, can't think of anything D:
