and not "obscure niche lines", I'm talking about normal mass transit used by thousands every day

@kitten dafuk?

🤔 Now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure Boston has 2 gauges.

@masukomi also, in Openrailwaymap there's only 1435mm lines in Boston

@kitten 🤔 Asking a couple people who worked on the Boston Green Line as mechanics. I'm pretty sure those trains can't run on the other rails but I could be wrong, and maybe it's for a reason unrelated to gauge. Will let you know what they say.

@masukomi oh, sure! now I'm curious

maybe it's a matter of loading gauge and not track gauge

@kitten here's what she said. She and her hubby REALLY know their 💩 when it comes to boston subway trains (especially the green line) so I'd trust them over the map until proven otherwise.

(side note: she's overseeing NJ train stuff at the moment)

@kitten also you know more about this than I do, so if her response doesn't answer your load vs track question holler and I can pass things on for clarification.

@masukomi but what they say seems to match what I say. all using 1435mm track gauge, but different loading gauges (so, wider trains in the same track gauge)

@kitten yeah, but the wider trains thing was about NYC not Boston.

@kitten train nerds on wikipedia agree with the map. BUT apparently the recent green line extension was built with the wrong gauge 🤦‍♀️ and will have to be regauged.

(everything to do with Boston trains is an absolute bureaucratic clusterfuck and has been for decades)

@kitten doubly so when you know that it took them ~10 years from "we're going to extend this" to actually beginning to extend it, and the teeny extension took years to finish. So, like this wasn't a rush job where no-one had time to make sure they were ordering the right parts.

@kitten oh geez. Apparently they knew and let services start anyway. Multiple derailments followed. 🤦‍♀️
