@kitten 🤔 Asking a couple people who worked on the Boston Green Line as mechanics. I'm pretty sure those trains can't run on the other rails but I could be wrong, and maybe it's for a reason unrelated to gauge. Will let you know what they say.
@kitten here's what she said. She and her hubby REALLY know their 💩 when it comes to boston subway trains (especially the green line) so I'd trust them over the map until proven otherwise.
(side note: she's overseeing NJ train stuff at the moment)
@masukomi but what they say seems to match what I say. all using 1435mm track gauge, but different loading gauges (so, wider trains in the same track gauge)
@kitten train nerds on wikipedia agree with the map. BUT apparently the recent green line extension was built with the wrong gauge 🤦♀️ and will have to be regauged.
(everything to do with Boston trains is an absolute bureaucratic clusterfuck and has been for decades)
@kitten doubly so when you know that it took them ~10 years from "we're going to extend this" to actually beginning to extend it, and the teeny extension took years to finish. So, like this wasn't a rush job where no-one had time to make sure they were ordering the right parts.
