@kitten Assume it will probably be missed. You will probably be over an hour late (boo) and get 50% of your ticket price refunded (yay!). If there is not another train Mannheim -> Köln you will likely have to spend the night in Manheim at DB's expense.
I try to always avoid booking any short connections onto the last train of the day.
@erincandescent@kitten do not use the form if you need to claim refunds for costs that you need to get back from DB btw, they’ll just give you a canned answer like “well uhh go talk to Eurail” send a letter stating “hello here is my itinerary, train $something got delayed and there were no further itineraries to $destination when I exited that train in $some_place so I got a hotel there, here’s my interrail, here’s the booklet, here’s the hotel invoice and here’s my IBAN, this request concerns compensation for the hotel stay only”
@erincandescent@kitten and for interrail you will also get some flat amount back up to a certain percentage of your ticket. they are pissy about proof of that delay though, so you need to weigh the €20 with potentially having to go to a DB Rz and getting a stamped confirmation (in theory every Rz should be able to print one for every German train but in practice they may not feel like doing so idfk)
@sam@erincandescent look if they give me a place to spend the night I'm just fine, whatever as long as I can avoid the 12 tasks of Asterix you're saying I'll have to do :blobwtfnotlikethis:
@kitten@erincandescent oh they're most certainly not going to give one to you, you have to get a hotel room at your own cost and then send DB a letter asking for the money back
@kitten@erincandescent I do have to admit that the last time I had to deal with this it did indeed feel like getting a passierschein A38 but that was before someone explained the above to me
@erincandescent@kitten for what it's worth, I run the 2nd part of that route relatively often and from experience I would assume that service will be delayed or cancelled, even more so because it's later in the day.
DB is currently my main motivation/inspiration to actually learn how to drive...
@benjojo@kitten@erincandescent there’s a saying with staff in the area: “Ruhrpott is like a black box, you throw a train into it and you’ll never know when it’ll come out the other end exactly”
@kitten The main reason for not using a night train for part of the journey was that this connection is more comfortable imo and shorter. Would want to try a night train sometime.
@kitten Just got one train because of running after other people and not checking if it's the right one or on the right track before getting into the train. The door closed a few seconds after in the face of others trying to get in.
